Don’t Cover Up, Clear It Up!

Its prom and graduation season again, so you know what that means, lights, camera and action!

This is the time of year, where photographs of a teenager’s most memorable moments will be taken. With that being said, smooth skin is vital and great make up starts with great skin care!

Most young women and men don’t realize that having a daily skin care routine is just as important as selecting that perfect suit, dress or gown for that special day.  In most cases young women are using make up to cover blemishes instead of what it’s supposed to be used for, which is to enhance your beauty. Make up can do a lot of things however; it cannot get rid of bad skin or blemishes. It can hide them very well, but it won’t get rid of the problem and that’s where proper skin care comes in.

To help guide you on your way, I selected a few tips to share with you from skin care expert and bestselling author, Paula Begoun.

Cleanse Twice Daily: Use a gentle, water-soluble cleanser to remove excess oil and makeup that lead to clogged pores and dull-looking skin. A cleanser with an antibacterial agent such as triclosan can jump-start the process of killing acne-causing bacteria.

Leave-On Exfoliant is a Must: Daily use of a well-formulated, leave-on then wash off product with salicylic acid (also known as beta hydroxy acid, or BHA) works beautifully to remove dead skin cells that get stuck in pores, mix with excess oil, and lead to breakouts. Salicylic acid also works to reduce the redness from acne and provides an additional antibacterial punch, getting you that much closer to clear, super-smooth skin!

Eradicate Acne-Causing Bacteria: After exfoliating, apply a lightweight anti-acne product that’s medicated with benzoyl peroxide. This topical disinfectant is genius at quickly eliminating the bacteria that leads to the acne you don’t want! Apply your benzoyl peroxide product to breakout-prone areas—don’t spot treat only the acne you see now! Doing so means you’ll end up chasing acne all over your face, which is frustrating.

Avoid Heavy Moisturizers: If you have oily skin, do not use moisturizer, even if it’s oil free!  Your face is already producing an excess amount of oil and there is no need to add more. If you have dry areas, apply a lightweight, gel-textured moisturizer for soothing relief or opt for a serum, especially great to prep skin for makeup.

Remove Surface Pimples: Need to pop that prominent blemish fast before your date?  You can do it in three easy steps. First, cleanse skin and pat dry. Next, using the flat of your fingertips (not your nails) place your fingers on the edge of the swelling. The final step is to gently push down and in on the swelling. If that doesn’t release the contents the first time, change the positioning of your fingers and try again. If that doesn’t work, you are done. REMEMBER, never scratch, itch or burn your pimple! What else to avoid? Toothpaste! You’ll read that this works great to eliminate a stubborn pimple, but in fact it can make matters worse by causing excess irritation.

It’s my professional opinion that proper skin care is designed to help with the youthfulness of the skin, the beauty of the skin, as well as keeping the skin healthy and clean.  Because there are a variety of skin care products on the market for all skin types, ask yourself a few questions, such as: Am I dry in certain areas on my face or oily? Does my face tend to peel or flake? These questions can help you narrow down your skin type.  The different skin types are as follows: Oily, Combination Oily, Normal to Dry, or Combination.  If you are still unsure of your skin type, visit a spa or a business that specializes in skin care with licensed professionals, or visit a dermatologist, and they will be able to analyze your skin properly, and determine what type of skincare you need thus preventing you from spending excess money on the wrong products.

Proper skin care leads you to flawless skin and allows your make up to be smoother, more vibrant, and last longer.

Also remember to drink plenty of water and eat a balanced diet which allows your skin to have that awesome glow every girl and guy wants.

So don’t cover it up, clear it up, and always be CAMERA READY!
